Property Tax Deadline Frequently Asked Questions

What is the updated property tax deadline?

Legislation passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors sets the property tax deadline to May 15, 2020.  the Office of the Treasurer & Tax Collector expects our offices will temporarily reopen for in-person CASH ONLY property tax payments on the following dates:
                    May 13  and 14 (9:00 AM-4:00 PM)
                    May 15 (9:00 AM-5:00 PM)

Our offices remain closed for all other business.  We strongly urge taxpayers to avoid using this option unless absolutely necessary and instead encourage taxpayers to pay onlineor by US mail.

What if I am unable to make a property tax payment by May 15, 2020 due to COVID-19?

We encourage all property owners who can pay their taxes on time to do so. Revenue from property taxes keeps our government running and providing vital services that the public relies on, especially in times like these. If you are unable to pay on time for reasons related to COVID-19, you should submit a request for a penalty waiver online after the property tax deadline of May 15, 2020.

What information should I provide with my penalty waiver?

We encourage taxpayers to provide any information that indicates how they were impacted by COVID-19.

When will I hear back about my penalty waiver?

We will process these requests as soon as operationally possible. We will review each one and make determinations on a case-by-case basis. You should receive a written final decision within 3 to 6 weeks via email if you provided one and US mail.
